It’s no secret that when it comes to learning something new, mastering the vocabulary is a crucial part of the process. While it may not always be the flashiest part of a lesson, teaching vocabulary in the classroom plays a vital role. Vocabulary helps students access, understand, and engage effectively with the content. Without a solid vocabulary foundation, deeper learning becomes that much harder to achieve.
In Social Studies, especially, vocabulary provides the necessary context for understanding complex historical concepts, events, and systems. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to create engaging vocabulary activities for many of our units. In this post, we’re highlighting the importance of vocab in the classroom and offering some inspiration for how to make it more interactive and meaningful. We’re also spotlighting three vocabulary resources we’ve developed for Ancient Mesopotamia, the Civil War, and Feudalism in Europe—three key units where vocabulary truly makes a difference!
Ancient Mesopotamia & Feudalism Vocabulary Bundles
Both our Ancient Mesopotamia and Feudalism Interactive Vocabulary bundles were designed to help students learn important terms in a thoughtful, fun, and engaging way. Perfect for teaching vocab in the classroom, these mini bundles each include six unique activities and games! They’re also fully editable, allowing you to adapt the content to fit your specific curriculum needs.Â
Students work with 12–16 vocabulary terms that blend academic language with content-specific terminology. These bundles include activities like Vocabulary Connections and Rephrase It. Vocabulary Connections has students rephrase the provided definition and make connections to the other words on the list. Rephrase-It encourages students to rephrase definitions, make word associations, and think critically about meaning. Other activities like Hand-Jive and Zig-Zag Definitions bring a kinesthetic and visual element to vocab in the classroom. With Hand-Jive, students are to make a creative hand motion to go with each word. With Zig-Zag, students write, define, and draw pictures of the vocabulary words in a doodle-style graphic organizer. Also included is a classroom game, Wager This, which adds a fun and competitive twist to review time. Students love this game! All materials for teaching vocab are available in printable formats and Google apps, so you can choose the format that works best for your class. Teaching Vocab for the Civil War
Additionally, our Civil War mini activity bundle offers a similar set of activities. In addition to Vocabulary Connections, Rephrase It, Hand-Jive, and Zig-Zag Definitions, the Civil War Mini bundle includes some additional fun and educational activities.Â
This bundle opens with a Read-and-Learn introduction to 12–16 key vocabulary words, which can be customized to match your focus. In addition, this bundle includes the In Other Words Vocabulary Card Sort Competition. This is a competitive vocabulary card sort game where students match a definition to a printed card. This activity comes with teacher and student directions as well as everything needed to play the game. There is also a Google Classroom version of this same activity! The bundle also provides another classroom quiz game, which includes a fully editable 15-question review game. This package also has an editable 15-question quiz, and a Quizlet game link (more on this below!)
Using Quizlet to Teach Vocab
To support all of these vocabulary packages, we’ve also incorporated Quizlet into many of our vocabulary bundles. If you’re not familiar, Quizlet is a free online tool that lets teachers create custom study sets using flashcards, quizzes, and games. It’s a great way to make vocab in the classroom more engaging. Whether students are reviewing at home or working in groups in class, Quizlet is always a hit. Here is a video of my students enjoying a Quizlet in class! I also have to mention that one of the newest Quizlet features, Asteroid Blast, has quickly become a classroom favorite.
Vocabulary Still Matters
Education continues to evolve quickly. New technologies, shifting priorities, and a more interconnected world. Though I firmly believe that certain fundamentals of learning remain important. Teaching vocab in the classroom is one of these fundamentals. There will always be a need to learn and understand the key vocabulary of each unit. This is where we hope to help.
