Resources for Teaching Medieval Europe

Teaching Medieval Europe

Medieval Europe is one of those iconic time periods that instantly captures students’ attention. For this reason, teaching medieval Europe is always a highlight for me. From knights and castles to serfs and the Crusades, this era offers endless learning opportunities.

In this post, we’re sharing two of our favorite resources for teaching Medieval Europe. First is our Medieval World History Stations, and second is our YouTube video lesson on Medieval Geography. Both are designed to help make the Middle Ages come alive in your classroom. We love both of these resources because they are engaging, interactive, and student-centered. Whether you’re introducing the topic or diving deeper into medieval society, these materials will help your students engage with history in meaningful ways.

We also have a wide selection of additional resources on Medieval Europe (and many other topics) available in our Teachers Pay Teachers store. From complete units to individual lessons, creative activities, and ready-to-use projects, each resource is designed to save you time while helping students engage deeply in meaningful historical thinking.

Medieval World History Stations

First up, our Medieval World History Stations are an incredible way to get students exploring major themes from the Middle Ages. With over 100 pages of student-centered activities, this resource makes teaching medieval Europe easy! This resource truly provides an interactive classroom experience. Simply print and place the stations around the room for students to rotate through. Or you can also use the digital versions for an online or hybrid setup.

This resource includes over six detailed stations. The stations all include the readings with accompanying questions, visuals, charts, and maps. Each station covers key themes such as geography, religion, politics, economy, achievements, and social structure. In addition, the clear visuals are designed to make challenging concepts easier for students to understand and connect with.

A comprehensive graphic organizer is also included to guide student learning. This organizer emphasizes the GRAPES framework (Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economy, and Social Structure). Additionally, answer keys and teacher instructions are provided. These stations are designed for grade 7 social studies, but they can easily be adapted for other grades or subjects. These Medieval stations also make excellent sub plans or supplemental lessons when you need a meaningful, low-prep activity.

Medieval Geography: Understanding the World of the Middle Ages

Our YouTube video lesson, “Geography of Medieval Europe,” is a whiteboard-style animation video that serves as an excellent introduction for anyone teaching Medieval Europe. The video explores how Europe’s landscape influenced life in this time period. From this video, students will specifically learn how geography influenced trade, culture, and daily routines. The video focuses on key features like the Rhine River, major mountain ranges, and natural barriers that impacted medieval life. The video also highlights how manors developed near water sources, as people sought localized systems of protection and food production after the fall of the Roman Empire.

To keep students engaged, the video includes an interactive “test your knowledge” segment. Here, students need to “follow the fish” on the map and answer the accompanying questions. This helps reinforce their understanding of what they just learned. It’s a fun, fast-paced way to help students connect physical geography with historical context.

Medieval Geography Doodle Notes Activity

The YouTube video pairs perfectly with our Medieval World Physical Geography Map Activity, an engaging doodle-style graphic organizer designed to support teachers who are teaching medieval Europe. This one-page worksheet reinforces the video’s key ideas through simple visuals, helping students grasp essential geographic concepts that shaped life in Medieval Europe. It’s an excellent way to introduce a Middle Ages unit or preview a broader geography study.

This activity works beautifully as an in-class lesson, homework assignment, or part of a flipped classroom model. It also includes an exit slip and an answer key for easy grading. Because it’s ready to print or use digitally, teachers can easily adapt it for either in-person, online, or homeschool learning.
