West Africa Empires Griot Battle African Kingdoms History Group Activity Project

This is a super fun West African Kingdoms or Empires Common Core ELA and Social Science mini-project that can be done in groups!

1. Students read the primary source Epic of Sundiata, an excellent way to teach about geography, leadership, economy, and achievements of the African Empire of Mali under Sundata.
2. Students use a plot diagram to dissect the story’s key elements (an answer key is included).
3. Students get to read one of six African fables as a group while using a storyboard graphic organizer to take it down to five key scenes.
4. Students practice a dramatic griot presentation. There are two options for teachers! Either option is fun, and it comes with a CCSS-ELA-aligned Speaking and Listening rubric:

• In one option,all students do a dramatic fable read and act out, battling with another group for the best performance.
• In another option, students get a choice of the fable act-out, a dramatic dance, or a visual storyboard.

Our World History Curriculum, including Ancient History lessons and Medieval History lessons, are key-concept based, focussing on the “big six” key concepts for social science, often referred to as GRAPES.  By learning World History with key concepts as a filter, students will become familiar with the crucial attributes that have allowed ancient and medieval civilizations to prosper. Also, students will build a framework, scaffolding future learning with the key concepts that will be repeated throughout their academic careers.
