How it works:

• Students read a one-page history of Mansa Musa’s famous hajj (religious pilgrimage) to Mecca
• The reading covers his journey’s geography, along with his leadership strengths as one of Mali’s most celebrated rulers
• A map and portrait of Mansa Musa are included alongside the reading
• Students then complete a Common Core writing guide, using evidence from the text to support claims about his leadership
